The No. 1 seeded Moose hockey team kicked off the playoff season, Thursday, Feb. 22, with a commanding 8-3 win over No. 8 seed Northern Lakes at Moose Sherritt Arena.
The win advanced the now 17-7-2 Moose on in the 5A tournament to face No. 5 seeded Chisago Lakes on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at home. Although results were unavailable at press time, if the Monticello team wins they will advance to the finals on Thursday, March 1 at Elk River Ice Arena.
Northern Lakes started scoring early in the first period. Monticello answered with consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead. Chase Bocken scored the first goal for the Moose with help from Jake Friede. Troy Dahlheimer scored the second for the Moose with an assist by Tyler Anderson.
Northern Lakes tied the score at 9:19 of the first period which lasted until 12:55 when Dahlheimer scored a shorthanded goal to give the Moose a one point lead going into the second.
Maple Lake sophomore Jeffrey Henrikson gave the Moose its fourth goal of the night with help from Matt Miller to kick off the second period. Northern Lakes scored its final goal at 12:33. Monticello secured the win with a goal by Jack Saunders in the final minutes of the period followed by three more in the third; Saunders was assisted by Dahlheimer.
Maple Lake senior Devon Lyons got the first goal of the third with help from Saunders, Nick Foldesi scored on a power play with help from Dahlheimer and Saunders,buuf.us and Chase Bocken put the final goal on the board at 15:41; Kayle Bocken got the assist.
Tyler Klatt saved 19 of 22 shots on goal for the Moose.
