The Annandale-Maple Lake youth wrestling team is headed for state after finishing fifth at a regional contest.

The Lightning traveled to Waconia, Sunday, March 25, where they participated in the Northland Youth Wrestling Association’s regional tournament.

ANML wrestlers defeated Watertown-Mayer in the first round 46-20, then lost to No. 1 seeded Wayzata 43-33 after wrestling them to their closest match of the day. Excited by nearly defeating the No.1 team in the region, the ANML wrestlers cruised to wins over Delano (46- 22), No. 4 seed Big Lake (45-22), and St. Michael-Albertville (46- 28) to advance.

“It was a long day of non-stop wrestling for our teams, but our kids wrestled with heart and were a true team. We’re all so proud of them,” wrestling mom Rachel Pribyl said.

The state tournament begins Thursday, April 5 in Rochester and runs through Sunday, April 8.
