Speech team is Fifth at Conference Meet

A depleted Maple Lake High School Speech Team took fifth place at a conference meet on Thursday, March 22.

Despite one-third of the team absent due to a pre-spring break Concert Band trip, young MLHS speakers stepped up and found success at Pierz.

Among them were Emma Payne and Anna Becker who finished fourth and fifth, respectively in Creative Expression; Kianna Johnson who was sixth in Serious Drama, and Emily Lewis received an honorable mention in the same category; Caleb Hagen who earned an honorable mention in Discussion; Josie Niemec and Katie Goelz who claimed an honorable mention in Duo Intrerpretation; Issac Wagner who was fifth in Extemporaneous Reading; Aidan Kolehmainen who finished fifth in Great Speeches; Mara and Sami Hayes who finished fifth and honorable mention in Humorous, respectively; Riki LaTour who claimed honorable mention in Serious Poetry; Alyssa Hadler who claimed honorable mention in Serious Prose; and Grace Fritz who earned an honorable mention in Storytelling. The team’s playoff run continues at sections Saturday, April 7, at Mounds Park Academy.
