The spring-like weather attracted a near record number of runners to the annual Irish Scamper, Saturday, March 17, which is part of Maple Lake’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
The most to attend this 5K was 615 in 2012. Saturday’s turn-out of 597 runners closed in on that record thanks in part to a sunny day that saw temperatures reach the high 40s.
“It was an awesome turnout with tons of energy,” organizer Ben Youngs said. “It’s always fun to see people showing up dressed in strange Irish apparel, just happy to be outside with the nice weather.”
Kurt Hellmann, 23, of St. Paul finished first overall in 15:55, and 15-year-old Elise Yager of Clearwater won the women’s overall race in 19:23.
Maple Lake provided three of the top 10 overall finishers. Devin Deringer, 20, and last year’s champion, finished second with a time of 17:12; Michael Miller, 16, was third in 17:20 and Greg Dorow, 23, was fifth in 18:08.
The top women’s finisher from Maple Lake was 21-year-old Kayla Hoistad in 24th place with a time of 21:38.
