State Bound: Moose Hockey Wins State Tourney Berth

By Brenda Erdahl

The Monticello Moose hockey team will return to the Xcel Energy Center for the State Class A Boys Hockey Tournament this week after cruising through the Section 5A tournament without a loss.

The No. 1 seeded Moose went through Pequot Lakes, Chisago Lakes, and finally North Branch for the right to advance. It is only the second time in the program’s history to earn a state games berth. Last year the Monticello-Annandale- Maple Lake Coop. finished runner- up at the prestigious event, but this is a different team with few seniors and mostly sophomores, head coach Eric Nelson said.

After defeating Pequot Lakes the week before in the Moose’s first game of the section tournament, the Monticello team advanced on to the semifinals on Tuesday, Feb. 27, where they had the home ice advantage over the No. 5 seeded Chisago Lakes.

The Moose struck first with a Nick Foldesi goal early in the first period. Chisago Lakes knotted the score before Monticello’s Matt Miller, with an assist by Maple Lake sophomore Jeff Henrikson put the final points of the period on the board to give Monticello a 2-1 lead going into the second. Chisago Lakes scored the lone goal in the second to even things up at 2-2.
