Despite a slow start to the season, the Maple Lake softball team is making fast headway to another winning year.

With snow still on the ground late last week after days of postponed and cancelled games now behind them, the Irish went indoors to the St. Cloud State University dome to take on Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in a twoday series.

The Thursday, April 19, meeting saw the Irish to a 12-1 win over the Lakers, and on Friday, April 20, Maple Lake cruised to a 13-1 victory over the Central Minnesota Conference foe.

Olivia Paumen put the first run on the board, Thursday, when she scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the second inning. Peyton Tongen scored another run on a passed ball and Lexi Bakeberg scored on an Amber Klug single to make the score 3-0.

The Irish put up another run in the bottom of the third when Mollie Scheiber scored on a sacrifice fly by Paumen.

The Lakers scored their lone run in the top of the fourth. Maple Lake answered with four runs of their own: Katie Goelz singled to push in Maki; Goelz and Scheiber scored on a Tongen line-drive single to center field and Paumen scored on a Megan Carlson single.

A strong sixth inning gave the Irish their last four runs to secure the win. Lucy Greenhagen got on base on a walk pushing Goelz home; Scheiber scored on a passed ball and Carlson singled to push Paumen and Ellie Jude across home base.

Taylor Hess got the win for the Irish. She went six innings, allowed one run on one hit, struck out eight and walked one.

Maple Lake tallied 12 hits and didn’t commit a single error.
