News from the Capitol by Sen. Bruce Anderson

Friends and neighbors,

When we return from Easter, we will be more than one-third finished with the 2018 legislative session. Here is a quick overview of where things stand on the major issues:

We passed a first step solution to get the system turned around without using new taxpayer funds. Most important, it includes strong oversight and accountability protections for taxpayers.

Elder abuse:

We recently unveiled the Elder Abuse and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act. This legislation provides a better complaint process, new investigation requirements, and improved oversight. It passed the Aging Committee and awaits a hearing in the Health and Human Services Committee.

We will follow up last year’s significant tax relief package by protecting Minnesotans from inadvertent tax increases due to the federal bill. The federal tax reform law itself is great for most Minnesotans, but our onerous state taxes could have unintended consequences. Our plan will provide a simpler, more efficient process to protect your paychecks.

School Safety:

There are several bills that make up our School Safety package, and each of which is moving through the committee process. We are focusing on ideas that work and can gather enough bipartisan support to pass, like allowing schools to use funding to hire more school resource officers, or invest in mental health and student counselors, or improve security infrastructure on their buildings.

If you have any questions about these issues or anything else we are working on this session, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office. It is a privilege serving you.
