Tanner Vassar, an Augsburg University student and Annandale- Maple Lake Lightning Wrestling alumni, competed in the Division III National Wrestling Tournament in Cleveland, OH, March 9 and 10. In his first trip to the national tournament, he secured All-American honors.
There were two returning national champions in his bracket. Vassar lost in the first round to returning All American, Dan Kilroy, from New Jersey. He then went on to win two straight matches. His first win was over No. 10 ranked AJ Aeberli of the US Coast Guard Academy. He then beat No. 6 ranked Brandon Conrad of Lycoming in a close match to secure All-American honors. Vassar then fell to No. 4 ranked Darden Schurg of Wabash, sending him into the 7th place match, where he defeated No. 5 ranked Jake Voss of Coe, to finish 7th in the tournament.
