Ask a Trooper by Sgt. Jesse Grabow

Question: Are bolt on bumper hitches legal in Minnesota?

Answer: Bolt on bumper hitches are legal but you must know and follow the rated capacity. Keep in mind, they’re not going to pull much of a trailer in most circumstances (for example a rating of 2,000 lbs with a 200 lb tongue weight.)

Many people spend a lot of time choosing the right vehicle, the right camper, or the right boat. Unfortunately, many people give little thought to the most vital link between the tow vehicle and trailer, the hitch. Do your homework and research when purchasing a trailer and hitch to determine what you will need. Note: Ratings vary slightly between manufacturers. https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/ msp/forms-reports/Docu ments/TR_RV_BoatTrailers.p df
