Irish clinch True Team Title

By Brenda Erdahl

The Irish girls track and field team took home its first State True Team Title, Saturday, May 19 in Stillwater and they did it in dramatic fashion.

After dozens of tough performances by the Maple Lake athletes, many of them personal bests and top three finishes, the outcome of the meet came down to just one race, the 4×400-relay.

“Our two milers had just taken first and second which put us in the lead but not by much,” said Grace Heying, the third runner of that fated 4×4 team. “We needed to perform at our best but (coach) Youngs came over and told us he needed just a half second faster from all of us, and we all just shook our heads and said alright we can do that. He told us that we needed to place seventh place or better, but that it wasn’t a given, we were going to need to work our butts off. Ella Kiebel was the lead runner and she brought us in at a solid spot then Ava Mergen kept it going.”
