Irish relay for fun

The Maple Lake girls track and field team won several events at the Lion’s Relay Meet, Thursday April 26 in Maple Lake on their way to a top team finish.

The Irish girls ousted seven other competing teams including Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted who finished second and Dassel-Cokato who was third. The Irish tallied 90 points for the win.

The girls shot put team of Bri Deringer, Anna Becker, and Kaitlyn Murphy broke the meet record on their way to first place. The Irish girls also saw firsts in the discus, pole vault and triple jump. At this unique event, all athletes compete as a relay team.

Several of the running relays competed as co-ed teams with boys and girls working together. In the mixed relays Irish teams came out on top in the 4×800 run by Ava Mergen, Daryn Strub, Mary and Mike Miller, and the 1,600 run by Mike and Mary Miller, Grace Praska and Ben Smail.

Overall the Irish boys finished fifth in a field of eight competitors with a score of 62. The top team score of the day was 90, tallied by Zimmerman. HL-W-W was second with 68 points.

The boys 110-meter hurdle relay earned top honors out of 18 competing teams, as did the boys high jump relay.
