Letters – Trooper Kevin Brisk

Dear Editor: That driver swerved into my lane. I had the right of way. The deer came out of nowhere and I didn’t have time to stop. I didn’t see it coming. They are all valid excuses that I’ve heard over the years as to why a crash took place and the excuses all have one common theme – it wasn’t the drivers fault. You could be the best driver in the world but when things happen quickly on the road, you might not be able to react in time.

That’s why it’s so important to buckle up the moment you get in the vehicle. You might not be able to avoid the distracted driver but your belt can certainly help you avoid serious injury. You should also make sure that everyone in the vehicle is properly buckled, regardless where they are sitting. Remember, MN law says, every person must be buckled at all times.

Injuries sustained in a crash when not wearing a seat belt can result in a lifetime of pain and doctor’s visits or even worse, you or a loved one can be killed, leaving behind a family filled with pain each and every day. It only takes a second, a second to keep you safe for a lifetime. Buckle up every time, every seat! Extra enforcement is on the road now through June 3 to ensure that motorists and their passengers are buckled and safe!
