The Maple Lake track and field teams will advance 35 athletes to the Section 5A Meet at St. John’s University on Wednesday, May 30 for a shot at a Minnesota State High School League State Tournament berth June 8-9 at Hamline University.
Both teams competed Tuesday, May 22, in Rockford at the sub-section tournament and section qualifier. The top four individuals and top two relays at sub-sections will get the chance to compete at sections.
As a team, the girls took home yet another championship when they edged Rockford for the title.
“The girls were obviously tired coming off true team state, but they still competed hard,” Head Coach Ben Youngs said.
The Maple Lake boys team also had solid performances and were able to slip past Spectrum for the runner-up trophy.
On the girls’ side, the Irish will send 11 athletes who posted top four finishes in 11 individual events, plus the 4×800 and 4×100 relay teams that finished first and second respectively to continue their season.
Maggie Larson broke her own school record in the triple jump going 37 feet, 1.5 inch. Surprisingly that was only good enough for third which shows how competitive the sub-section is, Youngs said. In fact, the top three triple jumpers from Maple Lake’s sub-section hold the top three seeds going into sections. Catie Fobbe won the shot put and Bryn Paumen won the high jump.
