Local youngsters are gaining confidence and improving their reading skills this summer thanks to a gregarious golden retriever named Rowdy.
Every Monday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. throughout the summer, Rowdy and his partner Lisa Perovich can be found at the Maple Lake Library encouraging new readers and helping them to improve their skills.
The program is called Reading with Rowdy and this year’s theme is “Figure it Out.” Rowdy lies docilely on his puzzle-piece fleecy blanket with the small group of readers around him. Perovich begins with a poem about the day’s book (all mysteries this summer) then the children take turns reading out loud.
