By Matt Brown

The Maple Lake Lakers officially claimed first place in the North Star League regular season when the season ended Sunday. With a 10-9 extra-inning loss to Buffalo on Wednesday, July 18, and a 4-1 win against Maple Plain on Sunday, July 22, they finished the season 17-3 in league play, three full games ahead of Hutchinson and Buffalo, who have identical 14-6 records but Hutchinson held the tie-breaker to take the second seed. At the beginning of the season these three teams were picked by the coaches of the league to finish top-three, albeit in a different order.
