Teen vaping epidemic called the “perfect storm”, Maple Lake Parents encouraged to get the facts.

By Brenda Erdahl Teenagers at Maple Lake High School have used the words “stupid,” “expensive,” “harmful,” “illegal” and “not cool” to describe the new youth health epidemic of vaping, but those sentiments aren’t shared by all. Studies have shown that the youth tobacco usage rate has increased for the first time since 2000 because of the popularity of e-cigarettes. According to a 2017 Minnesota Youth Tobacco Survey, one in five adolescents currently use e-cigarettes. That is a 49 percent increase since 2014’s survey. “These devices are the perfect storm. They drive addictions, are affordable, come in flavors and are by far and wide what adolescents are using,” Jacob Anson, health promotion coordinator for Wright County told a group of concerned parents and educators at a “Let’s Clear the Air” informational presentation and discussion on teen vaping and e-cigarette use Monday, Feb. 11 at Maple Lake High School.

The most popular E-cigarettes among youth are JUULs and
are USB-shaped
