Spring showers bring school damage

At their most recent meeting, Monday, May 13, members of the Maple Lake School Board were updated on the latest complications in the school’s summer roofing project. Superintendent Mark Redemske said contractors hired to remove rock from the roof inadvertently damaged a waterproof membrane below, and that when an unpredicted shower passed over, the building was exposed to some subsequent water damage. While sheet music in the band and choir rooms was spared, hallway carpeting between the rooms was not. The gym floor got wet and took water beneath, but a new electronic scoreboard was missed by a mere few feet, and after some baseboards were removed the floor was allowed to dry adequately. On the mezzanine level, rainwater made its way into the mechanical room and soaked some insulation, most of which is fiberglass, but some of which is asbestos, and Redemske estimated that about 180 feet would require replacement.
