Celebrating 125 years of sports

In this look back through time, the 1959 Lakers baseball team was in the Regional Competition facing Rogers when their ace hurler Larry Bertilson was felled in the third inning by a pitched ball. Pictured at top right, Laker teammates work over Bertilson as he lays on the ground. The Messenger reported the “big left-hander got to his feet and went on to hurl a brilliant ball game, which the Lakers won 8 to 1.” Pictured at bottom right, Bertilson is on his way to the dugout, evidently none the worse from the incident. The Messenger reported he suffered no ill effects from the blow, but packed an egg-sized lump on the lower part of his head for several days.
