Understanding severe weather can save lives

Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 12-16

By Brenda Erdahl

Temperatures in the 70s Easter Weekend had many people outdoors enjoying the warm weather, but with warm weather comes the possibility of severe storms.

Historically nearly three-quarters of all tornadoes in Minnesota happen in May (15 percent), June (37 percent), and July (25 percent), according to data from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In June of 2017, a violent storm ripped across Maple Lake injuring at least one person and damaging trees, boats, docks and homes along the shore. To prepare for that kind of extreme weather, each spring, Wright County Emergency Management and Homeland Security in collaboration with the National Weather Service, sponsors Severe Weather Awareness Week. This year it’s happening April 12-16.
