Brute’s Bleat – November 24, 2021

I haven’t been seeing very much wild life, animals or birds, in my drives to St. Cloud, etc. Apparently any ducks that might have flown this way on their migration south were small groups. I saw two small flocks on Varner Lake off Hwy. 55, one group on Sunday. I haven’t seen a live rooster pheasant all fall or for that matter a hen. Reportedly there are a fair number of deer, but I have come acrosss only one road kill so far. But all things aside it has been a wonderful fall weather-wise, so who’s to complain! Composting leaves on my lawn has been going well and that beats trying to stuff them in leaf bags. They’re supposed to be good for the lawns when they eventually turn into fertilizer. I’m hoping it will take the place of commercial fall lawn fertilizing. Sunday’s wind with gusts up to 40 mph was more than I cared for as it rearranged the leaves in my neighborhood. The wind didn’t make for a happy camper, but it kept me inside so I could watch the Viking-Packers football game. The game was an exciting one to watch with the Vikings snatching victory away from Green Bay 34-31 with a field goal in the closing seconds of the game. Both quarterbacks had outstanding games, but the Packers defense couldn’t stop the Viking’s last drive.

Thanksgiving will have come and gone by the time most Messenger readers get this issue. It’s a national holiday that I could have commented on last week, but I’ll assume everyone who wanted to enjoyed their families and friends as they took part in the special dinners of roasted turkey, ham, or beef. I hope to get more timely with the Christmas holiday! It doesn’t look like the local harpooners will be able to enjoy spearing Northerns for several weeks with the warm fall we’ve been blessed with. There were some freezing temperatures up north over the weekend, but nothing below zero. Some of the small lakes up by Bemidji might have a solid coat of ice, but don’t take my word for it. Use your chisel to check the depth of the ice if you decide you can’t wait for some below zero nights.
