Council to appoint next city mayor

By Katie Friedman, Correspondent:

At the Maple Lake City Council’s monthly meeting Tuesday, November 16, a resolution declaring a mayoral vacancy was adopted, and a process was established for appointing a replacement to fill the remainder of Todd Borell’s term.

The former Mayor Borell submitted his immediate written resignation to the city administrator and his fellow city council members on the evening of Tuesday, November 9. Minnesota law states that such a resignation is effective when it is received. The law also provides that when less than two years remain in an unexpired term of a vacant office, a special election to fill the vacancy is not necessary, and that the City Council has the authority to appoint a person to serve out the remaining term of the vacated seat.

As Borell’s term would have expired December 31, 2022, the Council has opted to fill the vacated office by appointment.
