Local girl is inspiration

By Brenda Erdahl

There is no doubt Mary Grace O’Sullivan is a hard worker.

She rises with the sun every morning to tend to her calves, which she feeds and washes and takes as good of care as any mother with her child on her family’s farm in rural Maple Lake. The young 21-year-old has everything going for her, except sometimes her autism.

According to the organization Autism Speaks, autism can refer to a broad range of conditions, but is often characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.

Thanks to Functional Industries and The Buffalo Country Store, O’Sullivan was given the chance to put that hard-working-attitude of hers to good work. She is now the “self-proclaimed chicken expert at the Country Store,” her dad Frank Sullivan said.

The Country Store was recently recognized with an award thanking them for their willingness to support individuals with disabilities by giving them opportunities in the workforce.

“Mary Grace just loves working there and they love having her,” her dad said.
