The Maple Lake Lakers continued their season Sunday night, Aug. 20 with an extra-innings win over Union Hill in Round 1 of state tournament play.
The victory finished a three-game sweep by the North Star League teams as Loretto beat the Luxemberg Brewers 8-3 and Hutchinson defeated the 2020 state-champion Fairmont Martins 2-0. Other notable events include a complete-game, 19 strikeout shutout by Watkins’ Matt Geislinger to beat the Carlos Cougars, a complete-game shutout by Monticello’s Alex Otto to topple the Raymond Rockets, and the first state tournament victory for New York Mills since 1969.
