What started as a traffic stop for Wright County deputies last week on County Road 37 near Maple Lake, ended in an Iowa man transported to the hospital for self-inflicted wounds.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 6:13 p.m. when Wright County deputies initiated the traffic stop of a 2004 Jeep Cherokee bearing Iowa license plates near 5068 County RD. 37 NW in Maple Lake Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, once the vehicle was stopped, deputies identified the driver as Terry Burmeister a 47-year-old from Dubuque, Iowa who had felony arrest warrants for 2nd Degree Assault and Terroristic Threats out of the state of Missouri.

When deputies attempted to arrest and remove Burmeister from the vehicle he inflicted several wounds on himself. Deputies were eventually able to remove Burmeister from the vehicle and perform first aid until emergency responders from Maple Lake and Allina Ambulance arrived on scene. Burmeister was transported to North Memorial Hospital for serious self-inflicted injuries.

In addition to Maple Lake and Allina Ambulance, numerous Wright County Deputies were on scene to assist.

Multiple Wright County patrol cars were on site for more than an hour along County Road 37 just outside Maple Lake Tuesday, Sept. 19, when a motorist pulled over for a traffic stop, inflicted wounds on himself.
