Kenyon Kingsbury learned more than English, math, and science during her years at Maple Lake Schools, she learned how to give.
The 2022 MLHS graduate is raising food for the local food shelf from now until Nov. 7 and she said she was inspired by the high school extracurricular, Rachel’s Challenge.
Kingsbury joined Rachel’s Challenge in the 7th grade and part of the group’s purpose was to give to those in need, especially around the holidays. One of the activities she looked forward to most was “We Scare Hunger.” Every October 31st, members of the group would dress up and go trick-or-treating for non-perishable items instead of candy. Whatever they collected was donated to the local food shelf.
Although out of high school now, Kingsbury had so much fun helping others in need she wanted to continue to do her part, but at 19 years old, she felt she was too old to go trick-or-treating. That is why she decided to let the trick-or-treaters come to her. Her Take a Bite Out of Hunger campaign invites families out trick-or-treating on Halloween to drop off non-perishable food items or make a cash donation at her house. Hers is the white two-story house on the corner of Rose Avenue South and Division Street East near the roundabout in Maple Lake, but if there is any doubt, it can also be recognized by the elaborate Halloween decorations and of course the sign in the front year.
From now until Nov. 7th folks wanting to help take a bite out of hunger can donate non-perishable items to Maple Lake graduate Kenyon Kingsbury’s Halloween fundraiser. Collection totes are located at her home on the corner of Rose Avenue South and Division Street East near the roundabout. Families are also invited to bring a non-perishable food item when they are out trick-or-treating this October 31st.
