I could hardly believe my eye when a saw a lone angler on Buffalo Lake last Thursday. He was fishing out from the library and the old courthouse. I hope he was wearing a life jacket considering there was open water on the shoreline. Other lakes in Wright County have open spots, and with warm weather predicted through Christmas it’s unlikely if there will be any safe ice around here. . . Upper Red Lake was affected by the wind Sunday when a ice flow broke away from the shore line and stranded about 50 people. I wonder if any of them tried trolling while they were waiting to be rescued. By Sunday’s 10 p.m. news they were all saved.
Not a whole lot of news around the coffee table Monday morning, but the conversation included incidents of getting lost in the woods while hunting deer. Some got out or back to their cabin on their own while others were rescued by the DNR or Forestry Dept. In two instances those looking for the lost person were told to stay put while the rescuers
said they would find them and jumped on their 4-wheelers and came back with the hunters riding with them. It’s easy to get lost while hunting deer when you’re on a deer trail and you lose your directions. Late season ruffed grouse hunters are seeing a fair amount of grouse in northern Minnesota. Daryl Hennen and I have hunted them a few times in the snow and followed their tracks. I don’t remember us getting very many, but one time I did see one fly into snow bank which is the way they keep hidden from predators.
