Inexperienced Irish still learning the ropes

The Irish girls basketball team fell to two of the top three teams in the Central Minnesota Conference last week, but are learning more every single day in practice, Coach Adam Ronnenberg said.

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, Maple Lake fell 70-24 to Paynesville and on Friday, Dec. 8, they fell 62-16 to Holdingford. The Huskers are also a top 10 team in Class AA.

The inexperienced Irish, who return only one starter from last season’s team, struggled against both teams’ defensive pressure.

“We struggled to handle the pressure and allowed easy baskets in transition,” Ronnenberg said.

Tessa Pribyl led in scoring and rebounds in both games. Against Paynesville she had 10 points and eight rebounds. Against Holdingford, she had eight points and eight rebounds.

“Tessa is only a junior and off to a good start this season,” Ronnenberg said.

The Irish also received a gritty performance from Junior Avery Lee who scored four points, six rebounds and four assists against Paynesville.

The Irish expected to be well matched Tuesday, Dec. 12 when they took on Legacy Christian at home. Last year the Irish played to within one point of the Christian school in a narrow defeat. Results of Tuesday night’s game were not available at press time. See next week’s paper for a full story.

On Friday, Dec. 15, the Maple Lake team travels to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City for another conference match-up.
