The Annandale-Maple Lake Lighting wrestling team had one of its most exciting stretches in recent memory according to Coach Ben Youngs.
On Friday, Jan. 12, the Lightning defeated the two teams widely considered the top competition for them in the Wright Country Conference, both by three points, then they won the Alexandria Big Ole Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 13, edging state-ranked Royalton for the win.

The Hutchinson dual was much closer than it needed to be, Youngs said.
“In two matches, the Lightning wrestler was winning but ended up getting pinned. It’s a unique part of wrestling–a wrestler can be dominating but get pinned and the points go to the other team. If those two matches hadn’t been flipped, we would have won by over 20. We will be working on the things that led to those losses, but the bottom line is that we won the dual,” Youngs said.
In what was probably the most dramatic match of the dual, Carter Courtright got a pin late in the third period in a back-and-forth match.
