Howard G. Selander, Maple Lake

Howard G. Selander, age 96, of Maple Lake, died Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2024, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, Maple Lake with Fr. John Meyer as Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Timothy’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m on Thursday at the church.

Howard George Selander was born at home on September 6, 1927, in Homestead Township, Ottertail County, the eldest child of Arnold and Anna (Maasch) Selander. Howard grew up on the family farm and attended school at New York Mills. Following his graduation, Howard honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On April 7, 1951, he was united in marriage to Donna Lucille Desrocher at St. Frederick’s Catholic Church in Verndale. Upon his discharge, Howard and Lucille made their home in Minneapolis while he attended business school. Howard worked as a credit manager for Lathrop Paint Supply in Minneapolis, followed by Schaper Manufacturing in Plymouth.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Howard possessed a multitude of interests that brought joy to his life. An enthusiastic sports fan, he had a particular passion for baseball and enjoyed the thrill of the game. He enjoyed engaging in matches of bowling and horseshoe, with his competitive spirit shining through with every throw.

Howard’s love for the outdoors was unparalleled. Whether it was spending peaceful days fishing on serene lakes or embarking on thrilling boating adventures, the beauty of nature warmed his heart and filled his soul. He found solace and rejuvenation in the great outdoors and felt a deep connection to the world around him.

To those who were fortunate enough to know him, Howard was a true jack of all trades. His curiosity and willingness to learn allowed him to develop an array of skills that amazed those around him. He approached every task with determination and a can-do attitude.

Above all, Howard cherished his family. His devotion to his beloved wife, D. Lucille, knew no bounds. His unwavering love and support were a guiding light for his family, and he leaves behind memories of unconditional love that will be cherished for generations to come.

Howard is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lucille of Maple Lake; children, Diane of Washington, Barbara (Curt) Peterson of Florida, Michael of Minnetonka, Craig (Jewel) of Brooklyn Park, James (Theresa) of Minneapolis, Robert of Maple Lake, and Thomas (Ruby) of Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Dorothy (Walter) Krantz, Carol Marden, and Wayne (Donna) Selander; sister-in-law, Noreen Selander; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Brock Selander; siblings, Leroy, Maurice (Darlene), Merle (Bob) Marden, Alden, Mille (Bob) Polk; and brother-in-law, Phil Marden.

Howard’s children will serve as urn bearers. Krista Elsenpeter and Sarah Goelz will provide music for the service. Arrangements entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial and Cremation Services of Maple Lake.
