Predictions of a mega storm Sunday and Monday prompted me to scribble out this column early Sunday afternoon to get ahead of the snowstorm rather than fight the elements Monday morning. I made a trip to Buffalo Sunday morning to get some groceries and spotted two turkeys feeding in a field north of Hwy. 55 and a bunch of roughly 15 ducks in one of Varner’s ponds. I couldn’t tell what species they were. On the way back Anna spotted a huge Eagle as it made a dip down to the water in one of the same ponds and came up with a fish in its mouth. I suspect they were all feeding in advance of the storm.

The snowstorm reminded me of how storms sometimes affected the State High School basketball tournaments in past years, more in the late 40s and 50s when we seemed to have more snow and storms!

I watched most of the boy’s basketball tournament and felt the semi-final game between Fertile-Beltrami and West Central which was a humdinger went into three overtimes before Fertile-Beltrami won 84-75. West Central is located in Barrett, not far from Kensington if that helps you. Fertile-Beltrami if further north and east near the town of Climax. Anyway Fertile-Beltrami faced Cherry in the championship game Saturday night. Cherry defeated Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 78-46 and Nevis 76-58. What was unique about Cherry is that the team has two brothers, Isaac Asuma, headed for the UofM, his brother Noah and a cousin Isaiah. They won big time 78-40 in Class 1A for the first state title for the Asuma Nation.
