The Irish softball team won one and lost one in a lopsided doubleheader with Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Thursday, April 18 in Elrosa.
The Jaguars came away with the dominating 16-3 win in game one and the Irish won game two with an equally lopsided 20-9 win.
Game 1
The Jaguars took a dominating 10 run lead in the top of the first inning that crippled the Irish until the bottom of the fourth when they managed three runs. Nora Goelz made it to second base on a grounder and error by BBE first baseman. A wild pitch gave Goelz the advantage she needed to get to third while Ashley Gaffaney got on base on a walk. Tessa Pribyl then knocked Goelz in with a fly ball to right field. Charley Sailer followed with a ground ball single to right field and Gaffaney scored. Pribyl scored the final run of the inning on a Taylor Walhowe pop fly to center field.
Despite the Irish effort they couldn’t close in on the Jaguar’s early lead.
Pribyl had one hit, one run and one RBI in the loss.
Game 2
Game two started out fairly evenly paced despite the final result. Maple Lake took the first at-bat and scored two runs, Danica Hageman doubled to score Ella Peterson who doubled with a fly ball to get on base, and then Hageman scored on a wild pitch.
The Jaguars scored four of their own in the bottom of the first inning.
Maple Lake followed with three big innings. The Irish scored five runs in the third, four in the sixth and nine in the seventh.
Peterson, Goelz, Hageman, Gaffaney, Pribyl, Walhow and Alyxis Strzyzewski all had multiple hits in the win.
