The Maple Lake track and field team got a taste of competition at two early indoor meets and coaches saw promising results.
Just before spring break, on Thursday, March 21, the Irish travelled to St. John’s University for an indoor Central Minnesota Conference competition to open the track season.
On Thursday, March 28, during spring break, a smaller Irish group travelled to Monticello for another indoor contest. The Maple Lake team faced four bigger schools at Monticello and most of their upperclassmen were absent due to spring break, Head Coach Ben Youngs said.
Mostly it was an opportunity for athletes to stay active during the break.
“Many of our athletes were junior high kids who we just want to learn the sport,” Youngs said.
While these first two early indoor meets were more practice than anything, Coach Youngs said they did see some promising results, especially at the St. John’s meet where a number of Irish competitors claimed first and second place awards.
“The coaches have been impressed by the effort and attitude of this season’s team. The athletes have been prepared for workouts and seem to be willing to get involved, support each other, and work hard,” Youngs said.
