Baseball team ends season at Section opener

The Irish baseball team’s season ended at the hands of Providence Academy, Thursday, May 23 in the first game of the 5AA tournament.

The No. 12 seeded Maple Lake team traveled to Loretto’s Arnold Klaers Baseball Field to face the No. 5 seed, Providence Academy and fell 5-1.

The Irish put their one and only run on the board in the top of the first inning when Nathan Zander singled on a hard ground ball to left field to score Joey Gendreau. The Irish held their one-run lead until the bottom of the fifth when Providence scored on a single to shortstop Wyatt Breimon. The Lions broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth with a four-run inning that the Irish couldn’t recover from.

Zander threw six innings for the Irish, gave up eight hits, five runs and struck out nine.

Luke Goelz and Nathan Zander both had two hits for the game. Zander went 2 for 4 at the plate with one run batted in. He also stole two bases. Goelz was 2 for 3.

The loss ends the season for the Irish while Providence moved on to face the No. 4 seed Breck School on Tuesday, May 28 at Breck.
