A rainy Memorial Day chased folks indoors for Maple Lake’s annual Memorial Day Service, Monday, May 27. Instead of conducting the program that honors fallen service men and women in the Community Park, a crowd gathered at the Maple Lake American Legion where they were treated to music by the Maple Lake High School Band, speeches, and poems as they remembered local soldiers who died in action and veterans who have passed away in the last year.
After an introduction by American Legion Commander Randy Mavencamp, featured speaker Zach Johnson stepped up to the podium for an emotional tribute to fallen soldiers.
“It really warms my heart to see all these people here today,” he opened.
The Legion and VFW Color and Honor Guard stepped outside into the rain during Monday’s Memorial Day Program at the American Legion in Maple Lake to raise their guns in a salute to their fallen comrades while a member of the Maple Lake High School band played taps.
