The Irish baseball team won three out of four games last week to boost their record to 3-8 overall.
Maple Lake 2, HL-W-W 1
The Irish kicked off their busy, but successful week on Tuesday, April 30 at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted where they pocketed their first win of the season.
Runs were scarce until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lakers scored on a pop fly to shortstop Nathan Zander.
The Irish responded with a run of their own in the top of the seventh when Nick Jost scored on a Braden Fobbe fly ball to left field. A Luke Goelz pop fly to shortstop scored Gabe Jurgens and the Irish took a 2-1 lead.
The Lakers had no answer and took the loss.
Danny Reilley pitched seven innings, gave up four hits, one run and struck out four.
Maple Lake 5, ACGC 4
On Friday, May 3, the Irish traveled to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City where they continued their winning ways by coming out on top twice at the doubleheader. The Irish struck first in the top of the first inning when Zander ground out to shortstop to score Joey Gendreau.
The Irish’s big inning was the top of the fifth when they scored four runs to take a 5-0 lead. Gendreau scored the first run on a Jost grounder to center field. Wyatt Breimon, Zander, Jost, Fobbe, Jackson Clapp and Landon Marsicek also had hits in the inning.
ACGC scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, two in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh to come dangerously close to tying the game but fell just short. Zander pitched six innings for the Irish, gave up nine hits, four runs and struck out seven.
