The Irish softball team had a rough week on the road. After falling twice to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in a doubleheader, Thursday, May 2, they made the long trip to Thief River Falls on Saturday, May 4 where they suffered three more losses.
ACGC 15, Maple Lake 12
The Irish opened at ACGC with a back-and-forth first game that saw the lead change hands several times.
Maple Lake put the first three runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Scoring started when Tessa Pribyl singled on a fly ball to center field to score Danica Hageman. The Irish had two more three-run innings in the high scoring game but couldn’t hold on.
Pribyl finished with three runs, four hits and two RBI in the outing.
Allie Walhowe pitched five innings for the Irish, gave up 17 hits, 15 runs and struck out five.
ACGC 15, Maple Lake 12
The second game against the Falcons ended identical to the first despite a more evenly matched first six innings. The Irish led 9-4 when the Falcons’ bats got hot, leading to a big 10-run top of the seventh inning that all but sealed the deal for the ACGC team.
Hageman had two runs, three hits and two RBI in the game.
Nora Goelz pitched seven innings for the Irish, gave up 15 hits, 15 runs and struck out four.
Maple Lake 0, Thief River Falls 10
Thief River Falls took a three-run lead in the bottom of the first inning and didn’t look back. Getting hits for the Irish was Ella Peterson (2), Goelz (1) and Charley Sailer (1).
Walhowe took the loss for the Irish. She pitched four innings, gave up 14 hits, 10 runs and struck out one.
Maple Lake 0, Sauk Rapids-Rice 10
The Storm’s big inning came in the bottom of the fifth when they pushed seven runners across home plate to secure the win and end the game.
