Maple Lake Irish baseball wins two at home

The Maple Lake baseball team went 2-2 last week to boost their record to 7-13 overall.

Maple Lake 11, Kimball 1

The Irish hosted Kimball on Tuesday, May 14.

Maple Lake put the first two runs on the board in the bottom of the first when Nathan Zander tripled on a fly ball to score Joey Gendreau. Danny Reilley then singled on a line drive to right field to score Zander.

The Irish’s big inning came in the bottom of the fourth when they scored seven runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Landon Marsicek kicked off the high-scoring inning with a fly-ball single to left field that scored Nick Jost and Reilley. Jost, Reilley, Wyatt Breimon, Gabe Jurgens and Zander also had hits in that inning.

Zander pitched all five innings, gave up four hits, one run and struck out six.

Maple Lake 7, Royalton 6

The Irish hosted Royalton on Thursday, May 16.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Royals pushed two runners past Maple Lake defense. The Irish responded with one run in the bottom of the third when Jost doubled on a fly ball to left field to score Jurgens.

Maple Lake’s big inning came in the bottom of the fourth when they scored six runs to take a 7-2 lead. Marsicek started the run when he hit a ground ball and Breimon scored. Multiple Irish had hits in that inning including Zander who hit a grand slam home run, scoring Jackson Clapp, Jurgens and Jost.

The Royals scored four runs in the top of the fifth, but it wasn’t quite enough to take the lead from the Irish.

Reilley pitched five innings, gave up nine hits, six runs and threw six strikeouts. Brayden Fobbe pitched two innings and gave up two hits and threw one strikeout.

The Irish traveled to BBE on Friday, May 17.
