
Lyrek makes first court appearance after Montrose shooting

Matthew Thomas Lyrek made his first court appearance Monday, April 29, after being shot by a Wright County Sheriff’s Office deputy April 15 in Montrose as he was being served with an arrest warrant.
According to the Wright County Attorney’s Office, Lyrek is charged with 10 counts – four counts of felony 1st degree assault – use of deadly force against a peace officer, four counts of felony 2nd degree assault – dangerous weapon, one count of felony obstruct legal process – interfere with a peace officer and one count of gross misdemeanor possession of ammunition/any firearm – subject to an order for protection.
According to the Attorney’s Office, the four 1st degree assault charges each carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or a $30,000 fine. The four counts of 2nd degree assault carry a maximum penalty of seven years in prison and/or a $14,000 fine. The charge of obstruction carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine. The possession of ammunition/any firearm carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine.
Bail was set at $2 million with conditions of no use of possession of firearms, ammunition or dangerous weapons, GPS monitoring and cooperating with pretrial release through Wright County Court Services, abide by an Order of Protection, be law abiding and make future court appearances. Bail was set at $5 million with no conditions.
Lyrek’s next court appearance is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, May 13.
