Apple orchards

By Brenda Erdahl

The tradition of picking apples at local orchards is one many look forward to each year, and growers are expecting great turnouts this fall.

The best time to harvest one of Minnesota’s 24 varieties of apples is after mid-September and before Halloween, according to the University of Minnesota Extension office. Not only are local apples ripe with flavor, but they are also a great source of fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, calcium, phosphorus and potassium 3.

According to Minnesota Grown.com, 20 million pounds of apples are grown yearly in Minnesota and there are 140 Minnesota Grown Orchards in the state. That’s a lot of apple picking.
