Square dancing comeback Locals build interest with hip new club, B&B Squares

A middle-aged man in a cowboy hat singing “Raspberry Beret” may not be the first image that pops into your mind when you think of square dancing, but it may be soon.

The Neutz’s of Maple Lake and the VanBergen’s of Buffalo are introducing a modern twist to the traditional square dancing through a new club they started this spring in Buffalo called B&B Squares.

Brad Neutz and Bill VanBergen represent to two Bs in the name as up-and-coming callers who are becoming known for incorporating contemporary music into their dances. Where dancers traditionally do-si-doed and promenaded their partners to primarily blue grass tunes, the B&B duo incorporates songs from the likes of Prince, Bon Jovi, Beb Seger, Journey and more.

“These aren’t your elementary school dances,” Brad said.
