Irish football on the mend for Homecoming

By Brenda Erdahl

Illness and injury forced the Maple Lake Irish football team to forfeit its varsity game at Eden Valley-Watkins High School last week.

The Irish were scheduled to face the No. 2 in state ranked Eagles on Friday, Oct. 4. The Irish still made the trip to Eden Valley, however, where their healthy players had a chance to take on the Eagles in an under-level game, Maple Lake Head Coach Mike Rowe said.

This week is homecoming in Maple Lake and so far, the forecast is looking better for Friday’s (Oct. 11) big homecoming match-up against St. Cloud Cathedral. Almost everyone is back this week Rowe said, but the Irish are still dealing with some injuries.

Cathedral’s record is 4-2 with wins over Warroad, Osakis, Paynesville and Royalton. Maple Lake is 0-6, but the two teams scrimmaged in August and the Irish competed very well, Coach Rowe said.

“If our guys execute the plan, they have a chance to win,” he said.
