John W. Schuster, Maple Lake

John W. Schuster, age 67, of Maple Lake, died unexpectedly due to a probable heart attack on Friday, October 4, 2024, at his home.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 11, 2024, at Cross Lutheran Church, Rockford with Pastor Paul Schuler officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday, both at the church.

John Willis Schuster was born on February 22, 1957, to Paul and Marcia (Thomas) Schuster in Urbana, Illinois. He grew up in Mankato, alongside his three siblings. He was a 1975 graduate of Wilson High School. John furthered his education at Mankato State University, graduating cum laude with a degree in accounting and finance. On September 6, 1980, he married Paula Kunkel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rapidan, Minnesota. They lived in several locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota, prior to moving to the Maple Lake area in 1990.

John dedicated his life to his family, his work, and his passions. He was a software developer who took pride in his work, establishing himself as a self-employed entrepreneur in the technology industry.

John’s love for his family was evident in all he did. Family meant everything to John, and he cherished spending time with his grandkids, creating lasting memories that will be treasured forever.

Aside from his family, John had a variety of hobbies that brought him joy. From cycling through the countryside to playing his guitar and tending to his garden, John found solace in the simple pleasures of life. He had a passion for target shooting and hunting, enjoyed making maple syrup, and had a fondness for tractors that was unmatched.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Paula of Maple Lake; children, Ashton (Dane) Nelsen of St. Augusta and Justin (Stephanie) Schuster of Newberg, OR; grandchildren, James and Jhett Nelsen; siblings, Peg (Bob) Mundahl of Rolla, MO, Tom (Anna) Schuster of Lake Crystal, and Paul (Soo) Schuster of Anaheim, CA; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marlys (Lowell) Evenson, Dennis (Connie) Kunkel, Derek Kunkel, Lyle (Trudy) Kunkel, and Kim Kunkel; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Marcia; mother-in-law and fathers-in-law, Irene Kunkel, Raymond Kunkel, and Paul Kunkel; brother-in-law, Lyndon Kunkel; and nephew, Stefan Evenson.

Matthew and Benjamin Schuster, Tyler, Paul and Eric Kunkel, Matt Harris, and Chris Mundahl will serve as urn bearers. Arrangements entrusted to Dingmann Funeral Care Burial and Cremation Services of Maple Lake.
