Duck hunters on Saturday had to put up with early morning fog and they could hear them whistling by, but were gone before they could see anything to shoot at. It got better when the fog lifted. Sunday was much better and taking limits wasn’t uncommon. I could hear the shooting Sunday when I went outside about 7:15 a.m.The clerk at H & H Sport Shop said there seemed to be a lot of Wood Ducks and Teal, but not a whole lot of Mallards.
My neighbor, Hawthorn, has a new Boykin Spaniel puppy and showed me a picture of the puppy carrying a Wood Duck around like he had just retrieved it. The duck was nearly as large as his young retriever, but the puppy showed great instinct and had the duck in its’ mouth just like he knew what he was doing. I was impressed and it will be interesting to watch him mature into a great hunting machine.
