Parks and Rec. look into all-terrain, track wheelchair

By Brenda Erdahl

The Wright County Parks and Recreation Department is looking to make the outdoors more accessible to everyone and to that end will pursue funding for an all-terrain, track wheelchair.

Ross Demant approached the County Board, Tuesday, Dec. 13 on behalf of Parks and Rec. asking they adopt a resolution approving a Regional Legacy Connecting People to the Outdoors Track Wheelchair Grant application to the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for the Shared Track Wheelchair Project.

Commissioners gave their unanimous approval to Parks and Rec.’s effort.

The grant is for $14,280 with a Wright County match of $5,000 which will be taken from a recreation programming fund.

Demant came to the board after the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously voted at their November meeting to recommend that the Wright County Board approve the Parks and Recreation Department to move forward to submit the grant application. Demant said the chair will give better access to individuals with mobility impairments to the County’s parks and trails.  The chair will be housed at Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park and be available to the public for free. The Parks Department plans on making the chair available to other counties through a lease program.
