Streeter girls

4th at state Class A golf tourneyBy Harry Hanson Setting goals is a part of sports. The Sauk Centre golf team had a third place team finish and a top-5 for Jackie Beste as two of the attainable goals set by the team prior to the State Class A meet.
Half of the team’s goals were realized after the two-day meet when Jackie Beste wound up in second place among the individual finishers while the Streeters as a team finished fourth.
Roseau came back from a six-stroke deficit after day one of the annual event at the St. Cloud Country Club to win over the first day leader, Staples-Motley, 673-678. Caledonia was third with 705 and Sauk Centre fourth at 725. Concluding the top eight teams and scores were Crosby-Ironton 735, Springfield-Comfrey 741, Waconia 760, and Lakeview 765.
Beste, who had moved from 16th place as an eighth grader, moved up to 6th place last year, and was in the lead with a first day total of 75 but was eclipsed by senior Lisa Meshke of Blooming Prairie who was in the tournament as an individual player. Meshke came back from third place at 78 in the opening round to card a 74 and overcome Beste’s margin by a single stroke.
“Jackie got into a little trouble on the par 5 ninth hole (final hole for her to play) where she had to hit her third shot from a curving downhill position,’ noted Coach Tim LaVold. “She came up short on the green and needed a 20-footer (putt) to tie and just missed.”
LaVold gave his team a great deal of credit for a strong comeback the second day, getting their final 725 total on rounds of 370-355. “A couple of girls played their best golf of the year while a couple came up a little shy of expectations on the opening day.”
Sauk Centre’s individual scoring came this way: Jackie Beste 75-78=153, Beth Welle 94-90=184, Maggie Kane 99-89=188, Bonnie Felling 102-98=200, Lindsey Welle 104-105=209, Heidi Bottelberghe 110-102=212.
