The best day thus far in a cold spring greeted participants on Monday morning as the annual Memorial Day Parade made its way from the Legion Club to the city park.
But it was the events of September 11 that made this event different from any other, as words of thanks for the heroes of the terrorist assault were added to the honors accorded to local veterans.
In his opening prayer, Rev. Steven King gave thanks to God for the relative serenity of Maple Lake. “Despite the terror and attack, You have graciously kept us safe and secure.”
Girls’ State representative Vicki Hruby read the traditional “We Shall Keep the Faith,” and Boys’ State representative Carl Pribyl followed with “The Dash Between the Dates.”
The Maple Lake High School Marching Band, under the direction of Chris Porter, was on hand to offer selections that included the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.”
Guest speaker Colonel Mike Lehti referred to the events of September 11 and the new resolve that will be needed to combat terrorism.
“Our nation has changed significantly since last September,” he said. “Indeed, the world has changed since then. Even our Memorial Day celebrations have acquired a deeper meaning.
“As a nation, we have now spent many months solemnly recollecting the lives of more than 3,000 American service members and civilians who died last September during the worst terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Now, more than ever, we recognize what it means to honor the lives of those who die in service to our great nation. Today, we honor all those who died defending America.”
A wreath was presented to commemorate Unknown Soldiers and as John McAlpine read the list of deceased veterans, members of the Girl and Boy Scout troops helped place flags on a wooden cross. Cliff Hudek read the list of servicemen killed in action and Legion Commander Gary Jude followed with a plea for those in attendance to help provide veterans with the recognition they deserve by bringing any missing names to the attention of the Legion and VFW organizations.
