On Monday, September 13, the Irish varsity volleyball team defeated the Holy Family Catholic Fire for their first home-court victory of the season. Subsequently, the Irish stepped onto their own court for an additional win on Thursday, September 16, against the Holdingford Huskies.
Irish vs. Holy Family
The Irish overpowered the Holy Family Catholic Fire by winning the match in three games. Game one was close because the Irish were unable to keep the momentum rolling in their direction. However, the Irish prevailed 25-21.
Aware of the fact that game one was close, the Irish raised their level of play by putting the ball in the court and letting the Fire make the mistakes in game two, leading to a 25-12 victory.
Lack of communication and serving in game three led to another close rally, but the Irish came out on top 25-23.
Highlights of the match included sophomore Rachel Sawatzke serving 10/10 with 2 aces. Senior Chelsey Kotilinek put up 17 set assists, and senior Jen Kempenich put the ball down with 13 kills.
“Although we weren’t at the top of our game against Holy Family, we still came out with the win. The team now realizes that we have to come ready to play for every game because we don’t know what other teams are going to throw at us,” said senior Jen Kempenich.
Irish vs. Holdingford
Indeed, Thursday night the Irish did dig up almost everything the Holdingford Huskies threw at them, which resulted in another three-game win.
Jumping ahead right away in game one built up the confidence of the Irish, leading to many more offensive opportunities for a 25-11 win. The Huskies scrambled to make plays in game two, but the Irish stayed on top for a 25-16 victory.
In game three not only did the Irish manage to keep the ball off the floor, but they also hit hard, defeating the Huskies 25-10.
This three-game success was led by senior Jen Kempenich with 12 kills. Big in the middle for the Irish was junior Kristen Lamont with 3 blocks, and keeping the Huskies on their toes was junior Lindsey Smith, serving 24/24 with 4 aces. Senior Jen Kempenich served 16/16 with 2 aces and freshman Andrea Rachel served 13/13 with 2 aces. As a team the Irish served 94 percent with 11 aces, crushed the ball for 31 kills, and dug up 88 percent of what the Huskies threw at them. With this victory the Irish now have a 2-0 record in the CMC conference.
