Gymnastics takes fourth at tourney

On Friday, December 18, the Irish gymnasts traveled to St. James to compete in a tournament. Maple Lake performed well, although it was only enough to land them fourth place overall. Individual team members for the Irish ranked with the best, placing within the top ten several times.

In the tournament, Redwood Valley took first place with an overall score of 130.425 and New Richland and Pipestone finished very close for second and third, respectively, with point totals of 123.825 and 123.750. Not far behind was Maple Lake with an overall score of 119. St. James came in fifth with a final score of 109.7.

The All-Around went to Chelsey Waltz of New Richland with an outstanding score of 34.925. Tops for Maple Lake were Kaitlyn Mooney in fifth with 31.450 and Jacqueline Finn with 27.250 took eighth.

In the floor exercise, Pipestone’s Filisha Lustfield took first with a score of 8.950. The remaining individuals scored very close, leaving Maple Lake’s Jessica Blade in ninth place with a score of 8.050. Other Maple Lake individuals also performed well with scores of 6.95 by Alicia Klein, 7.1 by Jacqueline Finn, 7.45 by Hope Karja and 7.550 by Kaitlin Mooney. The team total for the Irish in the floor exercise was 30.150.  On the balance beam, Redwood Valley managed to clinch four of the top ten spots, putting Becky Corbett in first with 8.800. For the Irish, Kaitlin Mooney and Cassie Blade placed eighth and ninth, respectively, with scores of 7.500 and 7.400. Other performances for Maple Lake were by Hope Karja and Beth Maas who finished with scores of 6.55 on the beam and Jacqueline Finn who finished with a score of 6.6. Overall, the Irish added up 28.050 points for their team total.  Though New Richland’s Chelsey Waltz walked away with the top spot for the uneven bars, Maple Lake did their best with Kaitlin Mooney and Cassie Blade representing the Irish within the top five. Mooney placed fourth with a score of 8.300 and Blade finished fifth with a score of 8.0. Others for Maple Lake, Jacqueline Finn, Alicia Klein and Jessica Blade, finished on the bars with scores of 5.55, 5.95 and 6.05, respectively. The Maple Lake team total was 28.300 on the bars.  On the vault, despite their highest team total and individual totals, the Irish were unable to land any spots within the top ten. Pipestone’s Lindsay Wolff took first with 9.125, followed closely by New Richland’s Chelsey Waltz with 9.0. For the Irish, Alicia Klein finished with 7.85, Jacqueline Finn finished with 8.0, Hope Karja finished with 8.05, Kaitlin Mooney finished with 8.1 and Jessica Blade finished with 8.3. Maple Lake’s team score on the vault totaled an impressive 32.45 points.   The Irish hosted Paynesville on Tuesday and those results will appear in the next issue of the Messenger.
