The Annandale-Maple Lake Lightning wrestlers improved their overall record to 7-4 with a split at the Watertown-Mayer triangular on Tuesday, Dec. 14.
A-ML lost the opening dual to conference foe Watertown-Mayer 22-46 to drop to 1-1 in the Wright County Conference.
The Royals, who are ranked No. 13 in Class 2-A, won seven of the night’s 13 matches. The Lightning won the other six.
“We forfeited at 119 and gave them bonus points at every weight where we lost, so that killed our chances of keeping it close,” said head coach Dean Jennissen.
“They (the Royals) are a great team that will move into the top eight in the rankings before long. I believe they have a great shot at dethroning Litchfield as section champs.”
Pete Nordlie posted the first win for the Lightning. He pinned Jacob Koelfarn to win the match 9-0.
Ben Anderson prevailed over Matt Hirsch in the 135-pound weight class. Anderson beat Hirsch 17-6 with a major decision.
Nick Clemence beat Brandon Shanahan 4-3 at 130 pounds with a decision; Matt Schultz beat Chad Kubasch 7-4 in the 145-pound weight class by decision; Adam Michalski was the heavyweight champion with a decision. He beat Andy Walker 4-2. And Jake Anderson beat Andy McCrain 4-1 at 125 pounds by a decision.
In the second dual, the Lightning defeated the Mound-Westonka White Hawks 48-34. The Lightning grapplers were paced by pin winners Spencer Witter, who defeated Nick Johnson 5-0 at 112 pounds; Clemence, who defeated Tom Eceles 9-2 at 130 pounds; Joe Nordlie, who won 12-2 at 140 pounds; Schultz, who won 11-4 at 145 pounds, and Michalski, who beat Matt Grorer 3-0 at heavyweight. The White Hawks will be WCC members starting in the 2005-2006 school year, said Jennissen.
“Everyone is working very hard and you cannot ask for much more than that,” said Jennissen. “We look forward to challenging ourselves at practice over the break. If we can raise our competitive level we will be up for the challenges other teams will give us in January and February.”
Coming up on Thursday, Jan. 6, is a Lightning hosted triangular at the Maple Lake High school with Dassel-Cokato and Rockford. The meet begins at 5 p.m.
Then on Saturday, Jan. 8, the Lightning will travel to Mora for the Mora Invitational, which will begin at 10 a.m.
