After a little over a week off due to the cancellation of the Rogers game scheduled for July 5, the Maple Lake American Legion baseball team got back on the fields to face Maple Plain as the visiting team on Monday, July 9. With one out in the first, Donnie Mavencamp got things going with a base hit followed by an RBI triple hit by Brian Redemske. Derek Rachel brought in Redemske with a sacrifice fly to right field. Bosten Fieldseth earned an RBI single to bring in the third run of the inning. On defense, Jake Johnson took the mound. A line drive and two strike-outs ended the inning. Zach Johnson led the second inning by drawing a walk and Landon Caughey advanced to first after being hit by the pitch. Mavencamp also drew a walk, bringing Redemske to the plate with bases loaded. He hit a double and Maple Lake scored three more runs. Rachel kept the bats going with a double that allowed Redemske to score. Three outs followed. Maple Plain struggled to put the ball in play as J. Johnson ended the inning with three strike-outs and a walk. In the third, Maple Lake struggled and they were soon back in the field. Maple Plain was able to get base hits and two walks causing a pitching change for Maple Lake and Caughey took the mound. Soon after the final outs were made. In the fourth inning, Maple Lake was able to score one more run when Mavencamp started off with another single and Redemske brought him in with an RBI base hit. Maple Plain answered back by scoring a run through a batter hit by the pitch and three walks. During the fifth, Fieldseth and Z. Johnson drew walks. Caughey hit in the leading runner with an RBI single. Mavencamp reached on a fielder’s choice and was able to score due to wild pitches and an error on the right-fielder. Maple Plain’s at-bat was quick with three up, three down.
The game ended in the sixth inning via the “ten-run” rule when Matt Strub started the inning by drawing a walk. D. Strub advanced his teammate when he hit a double and Fieldseth was able to bring in the 12th run of the game by hitting an RBI single. The final score was a 12-2 win for Maple Lake.
Maple Lake vs. Annandale
On Thursday, July 12, the Maple Lake baseball team headed to Annandale for their final game before playoffs. Maple Lake was up to bat first and the first three batters were thrown out at first. Donnie Mavencamp was on the mound for Maple Lake and only allowed one run. The second and third innings were uneventful as both teams sent up batters only to be retired back to their dugouts. Maple Lake started off well in the fourth with three batters reaching the bases. However, they were unable to score. In the field, Maple Lake was able to hold off Annandale by catching three fly balls. In the fifth, Matt Strub hit a lead-off double. Zach Johnson was able to reach first by forcing an error on the first baseman which sent Strub in for the first Maple Lake run and tied the game. Defensively, Maple Lake held their ground and only allowed one hit.
